City of San Leandro <br />Meeting Date: April 6, 2015 <br />Staff Report <br />Agenda Section:File Number:15-178 ACTION ITEMS <br />Agenda Number:10.A. <br />TO:City Council <br />FROM:Chris Zapata <br />City Manager <br />BY:Breyana Riggsbee <br />Acting Recreation and Human Services Director <br />FINANCE REVIEW:David Baum <br />Finance Director <br />TITLE:Staff Report for Resolution Authorizing Appropriation to Implement a Pop-Up <br />Teen Center Pilot Program During Summer 2015 <br />SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS <br />Staff recommends that the City Council approve a resolution for appropriation of funds to <br />implement a pilot teen program during Summer 2015. <br />BACKGROUND <br />On January 31, 2015 City Council expressed interest in expanding teen programs during <br />discussions at the City Council Annual Planning Session. <br />On February 17, 2015 the City Council agreed to further discuss the implementation of a <br />pop-up teen center to give teens a safe place to congregate. <br />Analysis <br />At City Council’s request, the Recreation and Human Services Department is proposing a pilot <br />teen pop-up program for summer 2015. This mobile recreation program known as “Teen <br />Takeover” will run for nine consecutive weeks beginning June 24 and running through August <br />12. Teens will “take over” various City and school owned facilities throughout the city to <br />engage in supervised recreational activities. Geared for teens aged 13-17, Teen Takeover <br />Nights will rotate location and theme activities on a weekly basis. The free program will run <br />Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 9:00pm offering teens an opportunity to socialize in a safe <br />venue. Scheduled activities include teen only pool parties at Farrelly Pool and the Aquatic <br />Center, movie nights at the Marina Community Center, sport nights at the 9th grade <br />gymnasium, and game night at the library. The program will incorporate recreational <br />components including: gaming, swimming, art & maker technology, sports, movies and music. <br />The pilot program will run the duration of San Leandro Unified School District’s summer <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 3/31/2015
