<br />MINUTES Page 4 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-October 18, 2004 <br /> <br />David Co, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council in support of Option 1 <br />due to effects of crematoriums on citizens' health and property values. <br /> <br />Benny Lee, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council in support of Option 1. <br /> <br />'Vafaa Aborashed, Davis West Neighborhood Group, addressed the City Council in <br />support of Option 1, stating citizens do not want another business which emits harmful <br />substances in West San Leandro. She encouraged the Asian community to continue <br />participation in City issues. <br /> <br />Elizabeth Huang, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council in support of <br />Option 1. She suggested the City change the zoning of some of its vacant industrial <br />sites to residential to allow for more housing to be built. <br /> <br />Kon Ming Ng, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, expressing support <br />for Option 1 and expressing concerns regarding pollution created by crematoriums. <br /> <br />Ada Kwok, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council in support of Option 1. <br /> <br />Hendy Huang, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council in support of <br />Option 1. He stated he previously submitted approximately 1,200 signatures from <br />residents opposed to a crematorium. He cited statistics on various diseases and death <br />rates and expressed concern regarding diseases being spread from bodies brought to a <br />crematoriunl. He submitted over 600 additional petition signatures to the City Clerk. <br /> <br />Mayor Young announced that a total of 2,916 individuals have expressed opposition to <br />a crematorium and the overwhelnling opinion expressed by the speakers this evening <br />was that crematoriums should be prohibited in San Leandro. <br /> <br />There being no further comments frOlU the public, and without objection, the Public <br />Hearing was closed. <br /> <br />Mayor Young thanked the audience members for participating in the proceedings and <br />for speaking on behalf of their C0l11nlunity. She expressed appreciation for the <br />audience's cooperation with the seating shortage, noting the difficulty in estimating how <br />luany people will attend a meeting. Mayor Young expressed hope that audience <br />members would retain their interest in City governnlent and some would consider <br />running for public office. She noted that if a group emaillist of community members is <br />available, the City could use the list to notify members of items of interest which arise <br />in the future. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos thanked the leaders of the petltlon drive and expressed <br />appreciation for his association with those leaders and the Asian community in bringing <br />the matter forward. <br />
