<br />Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting <br />May 20, 2002 <br /> <br />Page 14 <br /> <br />10. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />A. Council Member Santos reported on the success of the trash pick up last weekend <br />and said ACI took in nearly 100 tons of debris from the east shore area. <br /> <br />He also referenced a recent articlc in the Sun Francisco Chronicle that recommends <br />the state have a September primary and a November election and suggested City <br />Council consider this recommendation to avoid run-olT elections. <br /> <br />B. Council Member Loeffler retlectcd on scveral events of the past two weeks Cinco <br />de Mayo festivities, Building Futures for Wornen, and Dean's Beans fundraiscr for <br />Cirls Inc. and praised the hidden artistic and creative talent in the City. He said <br />the City should continue efforts to recognize those who keep the quality of life <br />vibrant in our cOlnmunity. <br /> <br />Council Memher Loeffler also commented on the Creekside Plaza dedication <br />ceremony and called it a "day of excitement." He offercd thanks to Joanne Lothrop, <br />David Inner, and the architccts and crartspeople for their eCf()rts in turning this <br />previously blighted area into one of pride. Council Mernber Loeftler stated this <br />project took redevelopment to a higher level in San Leandro. <br /> <br />Council Member Loeftler mentioned the Heritage Faire and thanked the elders in <br />San Leandro for sharing their stories and rememhrances with students in thc <br />community. <br /> <br />COllncil Memher Loenlcr expressed conccrn about the Durant Square traffic issllc <br />and the four impacted streets. He stated residents want a timeline to feel like they <br />arc included in the improvcment project. <br /> <br />Council Member Loeffler asked that the meeting be adjourned in memory of those <br />Americans who served and gave their lives to protect and preserve our nation's <br />quality of lite. <br /> <br />c. Vice Mayor Glaze commented the City Council docs not have an opportunity to <br />approve or disapprove of the placcment of tral1ic signals and signs and asked for <br />clarification on who has the authority to make these decisions. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Glaze asked that the lneeting be adjourned in rnel110ry of Betty <br />Kurilich, who was active in the cOJllmunity, including serving as Human Resources <br />Commissioner. <br /> <br />D. Council Memher Nardine commended Rccreation and Human Services on the <br />outstanding job they are doing in providing enriching activities for the community. <br /> <br />Council Member Nardine also praised Mike White, Finance Director, for his <br />passion "above and beyond" in preparing the budgct whilc he is still recovering <br />It-om surgery and encouraged him to work equally as hard on getting well. <br />
