<br />Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and <br />San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting - January 18, 2000 <br /> <br />Page 8 <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Galvan indicated the main goal in looking at privatization of services <br />is saving money. He feels the City Council should take a look at the other <br />opportunities in the City to privatize services, at least to review them to see if it <br />would be profitable. <br /> <br />Council Member Nardine agreed with what Council Members had stated, <br />especially Council Member Glaze. She also commended Robert Rockett, his <br />Department, and all the employees who have provided service to the community. <br />She added that she has never. had a complaint about the garbage service, and the <br />employees have gone above and beyond the call of duty to do their job well. <br /> <br />Council Member Loeffler thanked Council Member Lothrop for raising the issues <br />she did. He indicated that looking into privatization is a way to look at how we do <br />business in the City. He indicated the public expects the City Council to make the <br />best use of their dollars. <br /> <br />The Mayor clarified with the City Manager that Wandzia Grycz will be the liaison, <br />along with Bob Rockett, with Alameda County Industries, Inc. (ACI), which is the <br />company staff has been negotiating with. It was further noted that once the <br />operation is under way the new Environmental Services Manager may be the <br />logical person to be the contact for the community. <br /> <br />The Mayor indicated she feels this is a good move for the City. She feels ACI will <br />bring to the citizens and the City some new ideas on how to take care of the <br />garbage. She commended the Citizens Refuse Committee for their willingness to <br />serve. She further indicated she feels the issue of privatization should be weighed <br />on a case-by-case basis. <br /> <br />The following Motion was then introduced: <br /> <br />Minute Order No. 2000-5, Matter of Discussion Regarding the Privatization <br />of the City's Refuse Service. (1078) <br /> <br />The City Council directed stafT to proceed with the preparation of the <br />necessary documents to privatize the City's refuse service and to place the <br />item on the Agenda for a Special City Council Meeting to be held on <br />January 31, 2000. <br /> <br />M1S/C Galvan and Loeffler.
