;

Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting
June 5, 2000

Page 10

C. Vice Mayor Glaze added that he shares concerns regarding East 14th Street, as
well as the Darius Court issues. He indicated he is glad to hear the Chamber of
Commerce is offering to help with the proposed Park Bond Measure. Vice Mayor
Glaze also noted he is supportive of looking seriously at continuing the funding for
the Municipal Band. In conclusion, Vice Mayor Glaze echoed comments made
regarding the Cherry Festival and noted he represented the Mayor at Memorial
Day Services at the Chapel of Chimes in Hayward. He also represented the Mayor
at Arroyo High School where he presented a $200 scholarship donated by Mayor
Young personally and indicated the Mayor will be presenting an additional
scholarship to a San Leandro High School student in the same amount. He
commended the Mayor for offering those scholarships.

D. Council Member Loefiler thanked Dave Bohne and Kathi Heimann for their efforts
regarding the Cherry Festival and indicated the Marina is the right place for the
event. He did indicate there should be dialogue as to where the parade should be
held and how the shuttle system might be enhanced for next year's Festival.

Council Member Loefller commented further on a San Francisco Chronicle article
regarding "traffic calming," which also suggested drivers are becoming more rude
to pedestrians. Council Member Loefller suggested the City Attorney look into
whether the City could impose "double fines" for those drivers who endanger
pedestrians. It was also noted other communities are utilizing lighted, timed
crosswalks to help address the pedestrian safety problem.

Council Member Loefller commented on his attendance at a Centenarian Luncheon
held recently. He suggested perhaps a Centenarian Book containing names and a
brief biography of those persons who had turned 100 in our community be
maintained by a small club formed to do so. He indicated, in addition, an
upcoming meeting regarding 1-580 at Assumption School facilitated by
Assemblywoman Corbett and indicated she needs the community's support. In
conclusion, he thanked the Chamber of Commerce for stepping forward to
acknowledge the need to work together regarding the proposed Park Bond
Measure. In closing, he indicated tomorrow, June 6, 2000, is the celebration and
remembrance of D-Day in Europe.

E. Council Member Lothrop commented on the request from the Municipal Band and
indicated they perform with pride and are respected in the community. She also
commented on the successful Cherry Festival and commended staff for their
efforts.

Council Member Lothrop added that she continues to have concerns regarding
Walnut Drive and indicated there is some public confusion about what types of
services they are entitled to, as well as the condition of the street, and whether or
not it can be improved.
