MINUTES Page 5 <br />Ciry of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-September 17, 2007 <br />Craig Williams, Hayward Regional Democrats, addressed the City Council, commenting <br />on the war in Iraq and the strong opposition to the U.S. presence in Iraq. Mr. Williams <br />commented that approximately 160 cities have adopted resolutions supporting an end to the <br />Iraq war. <br />Mayor Santos noted that several speakers have indicated their desire to speak on the subject of <br />the Iraq war. He indicated that the City Council has a policy of not taking positions on <br />international affairs. <br />Richard Becker, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, commenting on the <br />war in Iraq. Mr. Becker urged the City Council to reconsider its policy of not dealing with <br />international affairs, as the war affects San Leandro residents. <br />Rev. Kathy Huff, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, commenting in <br />support of a peaceful solution to the end of the war in Iraq. Rev. Huff commented on the <br />social costs of the war, and urged the Council to consider adoption of a resolution to support <br />an end to the Iraq war. <br />Brenda Salgado, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, reading a draft <br />resolution, entitled, "City of San Leandro Resolution No. Supporting a Diplomatic <br />Approach to Ending the Iraq War and Bringing Our Troops Home." Ms. Salgado provided <br />copies of the resolution to the Council. <br />Stephen Lee, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, addressed the City Council, <br />requesting that the Council consider adopting the resolution supporting the end to the Iraq <br />War and commenting on the cost of the war in terms of dollars and lives. <br />Richard Ellison, Citizens to Improve Burred Field, addressed the City Council, <br />commenting on a petition being circulated in the community which urges the City, San <br />Leandro Unified School District, local businesses and citizens to work together in the <br />development of Burrell Field into a new state-of--the-art facility. <br />David Ellington, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, commenting on the <br />need for improvements to Burrell Field and the importance of the field to the community's <br />youth. <br />Jamie McReynolds, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, speaking in favor of <br />the Iraq resolution and requesting that the Council reconsider its policy regarding not taking <br />positions on international issues. <br />Harold Perez, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, commenting regarding <br />tanker cars containing explosive substances which are parked on the railroad tracks behind his <br />house, trucks parked on the former Albertson's warehouse site, and MV Transportation diesel <br />trucks idling in his neighborhood. Mr. Perez commented on the salaries made by MV <br />Transportation workers, which he stated are below the City's living wage. <br />
