How would you describe your downtown?
.Lively, vibrant, walkable, quaint and historic, with a nlix of nationally known businesses and local
specialty boutiques.
How does your community's past influence its situation today?
San Leandro is an important city in San Francisco East Bay history, having been one of the first towns
settled in the East Bay and subsequently serving as an early county seat for Alameda County. The town
of San Leandro got its beginnings through division of several of the original Spanish land grants in the
area -those of the Estudillo and Peralta families. The Casa Peralta and other historic assets still dot the
downtown landscape.
Like many towns, San Leandro was largely agricultural in its early days, with many flower growers and
fruit orchards, especially cherries for which the town was known and its annual Cherry Festival was
named. (San Leandro was nicknamed the "Cherry City" in years past). Industry and commerce
flourished in early to mid 1900 as San Leandro became an important manufacturing hub in the Bay
Area. Today the City has a diverse mix of businesses, including manufacturing, high tech, and service
industries; well-established, friendly neighborhoods; successful commercial shopping districts; and a
well-maintained industrial. corridor.
Education
What four words would you use to describe your school district(s)?
We have two that serve San Leandro: San Leandro Unified School District and San Lorenzo Unified
School District. The majority of public schools in the area are part of the San Leandro Unified School
District.
Both can be regarded as established, strong, innovative (San Lorenzo's 5 ].earning comnnrnities concept)
diverse and transforming and reinvesting for the future
Any special initiatives being undertaken to improve quality of education?
A $110 M Measure B Bond Act was approved in 2006 that will enable San Leandro United to expand
its facilities to meet current and growing needs, including the establishment of a new 9t~' grade campus,
expansion of the high school library, c--eation of a visual and performing arts center as well as a career
and technical education center.
The Districts have also undertaken a number of important renovation efforts in recent years, including
the upgrading of sports facilities (Bancroft Middle School, Muir Soccer fields and Washington Manor
Middle school), the complete reconstruction of Jefferson Elementary School, the opening of a brand new
adult school. campus, a new wing at San Leandro High. School and more.
