Where can the Board's performance be improved?
The consensus here is that the Board needs new members with corporate and
community connections so that fundraising activities will be more successful.
Other items such as increased attendance at meetings and more involvement with
projects were also mentioned.
What other opinions about or suggestions for DSFRC would you like to share with
us?
Comments varied and included statements of concern for key position turnover
and the ability of the Board to lead successful general and capital fundraising
efforts.
Recommendations:
Based on feedback by and concerning Board members, we think it would be advisable to
provide them with coaching or training in how to maximize fundraising results. The
current professional expertise that frames this group's fundraising activities follows the
philosophy that you can continue to tap into the same sources of funds without eroding
results. It is true that within circles of affluent individuals, it is generally understood that
people support each other's causes on an ongoing basis. However, in our professional
experience, better results are achieved if there is a conscious effort to expand fundraising
efforts by adding new sources for funds -such as other affluent groups of individuals or
expanding into corporate arenas. We recommend that DSFRC train Board members in
how to expand their list of contacts to include new individuals and organizations, how to
enroll contributors as ongoing supporters, and techniques to make them more effective in
getting donations.
One significant donation came in after a tour of DSFRC. We recommend that a formal
tour be designed for potential fundraisers (by appointment only). This tour could be
offered to anyone that seems to be considering a donation but is not fully ready to
commit. The Board could set up these tours for on-the-fence contributors and then ask
for the donation.
Funding Organizations
Funding Organizations -Survey Results: Summary
Funding organizations generally do their own audits and from this, and ongoing
interactions, Davis Street stays aware of the quality of those relationships. To
supplement this information, we contacted 7 major funding sources for DSFRC and
requested their participation in our survey. Six organizations responded and their
detailed responses can be found in Appendix F: Summary of Funding Organizations'
Feedback. Please note that all of the funding organizations agreed to participate but only
6 of the 7 organizations contacted followed through.
Sustainability Study: Davis Street Family Resource Center - 4/OS Page 23 of 96
