Effective Buying Income
"Effective Buying Income" is defined as personal income less personal tax and nontax
payments, a number often referred to as "disposable" or "after-tax" income. Personal income
is the aggregate of wages and salaries, other labor-related income (such as employer
contributions to private pension funds), proprietor's income, rental income (which includes
imputed rental income of owner-occupants of non-farm dwellings), dividends paid by
corporations, interest income from all sources, and transfer payments (such as pensions and
welfare assistance). Deducted from this total are personal taxes (federal, state and local),
nontax payments (fines, fees, penalties, etc.) and personal contributions to social insurance.
According to U.S. government definitions, the resultant figure is commonly known as
"disposable personal income."
CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
Effective Buying Income
As of January 1, 1998 through 2002
Total Effective Median Household
Buying Income Effective Buying
Year Area (000's Omitted) Income
1998 San Leandro $ 1,451,938 $39,034
Alameda County 46,763,122 45,029
California 551,999,317 37,091
United States 4,621,491,730 35,377
1999 San Leandro $ 1,524,566 $40,935
Alameda County 1,730,185 45,382
California 590,376,663 39,492
United States 4,877,786,658 37,233
2000 San Leandro $ 1,785,838 $45,151
Alameda County 31,864,401 50,631
California 652,190,282 44,464
United States 5,230,824,904 39,129
2001 San Leandro $ 1,773,510 $50,839
Alameda County 34,081,757 54,076
California 650,521,407 43,532
United States 5,303,481,498 38,365
2002 San Leandro $ 1,611,348 $45,577
Alameda County 32,857,351 49,574
California 647,879,427 42,484
United States 5,340,682,818 38,035
Source: Sales F~ Marketing Management Survey of Buying Power
D-3
