Minutes -City of San Leandro City Council Meeting -January 4,1999 Page 3
B. AI Rosenga, 542 Parrott Street, addressed the Council regazding Disaster
Prepazedness and commented that staff has been pazed down to one person. He
stressed the importance of continuing the training programs that have been
started. With the budget discussions coming up, he commented that there should
be a budget considered to help seniors put their houses into a condition where
they will survive a disaster. He noted that we can have all the corrective
procedures in place; however, if half of the houses in San Leandro fall down, all
the preparedness done so far will not have been helpful. He feels an inspection
program should be considered for some of the older districts so the recovery
people will know exactly where to go to be proactive before a disaster hits.
Mr. Rosenga continued by commenting on the Fire Department consolidation that
took place a couple of years ago and requested to see a report on the cost savings
that were realized and what the true costs are since joining with the County for
services. He would like to see a report on that sometime before now and June
1999, noting the contract renewal period comes up in July 1999.
C. Larry Norry, 2532 Williams Street, addressed the Council regarding the need
for a report on whether or not savings were realized by consolidating the Fire
Department. He also questioned why there is never any information available on
Closed Session items discussed. He referenced the Conference Center and noted
Council Member Nazdine had previously indicated misinformation was being sent
out in a neighborhood newsletter. He would like to know more about what is
happening with the Conference Center.
The City Attorney responded that announcements aze made during the Council
Meeting if any actions are taken. It was noted that most of the time only
discussions are taking place.
D. Laverne Anderson, 1495 - 159 Avenue addressed the Council wishing
everyone a Happy New Year. He noted that Fairway Drive is as smooth as silk as
promised by the City Manager. He also thanked the Mayor and Council Member
Nardine for coming out to the Bonaire Christmas Dinner. He further commented
on the many red-light runners that still exist.
Debbie DeLong, 485 Cascade, addressed the Council regazding the issue of no
animal control on weekends and/or holidays. She is the neighbor that called 911
regazding the vicious dogs in their neighborhood. She was told that she needed to
go to a City Council Meeting and address the Council with her concerns. She
stated she was concerned as there was a threat to her neighbors and felt the
response was unacceptable.
