Minutes -City of San Leandro City Council Meeting
January 19, 1999
Page 3
4. Mayor's Human Relations Council Meeting of January 5, 1999 -- Council
Member Lothrop reported on the meeting highlights.
C. City Council Comments
1. Council Member Loeffler expressed his disappointment in that there was no
official recognition of Martin Luther King, 7r., this last weekend. He would
like the Mayor's Human Relations Council to look into how the City might
facilitate some festivities honoring Martin Luther King, 7r., for next year.
2. Council Member Lothrop commented on the upcoming Wahnart Grand
Opening and suggested staff consider some sort of traffic control at Davis &
Wazden during the first week. The Mayor indicated staff has been working on
that issue. Council Member Nardine requested staff provide a brief report on
the proposed "plan" by the next Council Meeting.
Council Member Lothrop also remazked that she has received comments from
various homeowners' association members that have not received information
on meetings planned regazding the update of the General Plan. She clarified
with staff that the homeowners' associations had been notified in addition to
information provided in the City Lites Newsletter.
Council Member Lothrop reported that she attended a recent high school
debate event and suggested using something along those lines to recognize
Martin Luther King, 7r., next year.
3. Council Member Loeffler commented on the upcoming budget and suggested
staff go to neighborhood associations and go over the City's finance plans. He
noted that he feels there is not enough outreach to the neighborhoods and there
needs to be an effort to move the budget out of City Hall and into the
neighborhoods.
Council Member Loeffler reported on his attendance, along with other Council
Members, at the Bay Area Council Economic Forum in San Jose. He noted
the Governor spoke regazding the issue of education and that it takes everyone
to get involved in schools to make a difference. He also commented to the
Council the likelihood that computers will be changing dramatically in the neaz
future.
Council Member Loeffler continued by commenting on a recent report
regazding overtime paid to police officers. He indicated the City of San
Leandro is not in the same venue as other cities, but we do pay overtime which
amounts to approximately $800,000 a yeaz. He added that the Police
Department is the highest user of overtime costs in the City.
