Minutes -City of San Leandro City Council and Page 7 <br />San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting -May 3, 1999 <br />Council discussion ensued regarding the necessity to keep the Ad Hoc <br />Committee intact. Council Member Loeffler commented on the complexity of <br />the agencies involved with I-580 issues. It was noted that staff has been asked <br />to ascertain the position of various elected officials; i.e., the Mayor of Oakland, <br />regarding truck traffic on I-580. The idea is to develop a proactive strategy. <br />He further commented on the editorial done by the Daily Review, which clearly <br />stated their support for maintaining I-580 as anon-truck route. He added that, <br />on the other side of the coin, there are truck issues that need to be addressed. <br />He concluded by stating this Committee should look at those truck issues and <br />determine where they fit into the overall transportation needs of San Leandro. <br />Vice Mayor Galvan added that trucks are allowed on I-580 through San <br />Leandro. They are not allowed in the City of Oakland. <br />No action taken; Committee will remain. <br />2. Council Member Nardine complimented the Daily Review on the "Teenager's <br />Heads Up" articles and for providing a venue for them to speak their mind. <br />Council Member Loeffler commended a group of residents who organized the <br />City's first "Neighborhood Response Team," especially Joanne Ach. He <br />thanked Dan Lunsford and Fire Chief McCammon for working with the <br />Chetland Road area. <br />Council Member Loeffler further questioned the status of the Perata Bill (375). <br />The Mayor responded that she has heard from a number of Senators who have <br />said it is unlikely the bill will pass. <br />4. Mayor Young indicated Council Member Loeffler and she attended a meeting <br />on Saturday regarding childcare providers. She noted the people who are <br />caring for our children of three to five years of age, in their most formative <br />years, are making minimum wage for doing so. <br />Mayor Young indicated Terry Roberts, Public Works Director for the City of <br />Oakland, is leaving, and a Commendation has been prepared for that occasion. <br />She indicated she needs someone to attend in her absence. <br />Mayor Young also thanked the Daily Review's Corporate Partner, ANG, for <br />distribution of a recycling guide. <br />Mayor Young also noted she received a letter from the Office of the Mayor of <br />the City of Naga, indicating they will be celebrating their proclamation of <br />Philippine independence on June 12 and have invited the Mayor and the entire <br />Council to visit during the celebration as their guests.
