Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 6 -
March 2, 1998
Owen Marron, Alameda Central Labor Council, addressed the Council in
opposition to the Conference Center. He stated it will force them to
move forward with an initiative process to oppose it. The unions would
do their utmost to do away with this proposal to give away taxpayers'
money. He would support a sound development for that area but not this
development.
Marianne Charlton, 14241 Ivy Court, addressed the Council with concerns
for the misuse of taxpayers' money and asked how this development will
affect the Marina Inn which is already there.
Paul Cayere, 773 Juana Avenue, Representing the San Leandro Chamber of
Commerce, addressed the Council and spoke in favor of the proposed
Conference Center. He stated it is necessary to attract high-paying
corporate jobs, businesses, and jobs. He commented it will also attract
international and domestic companies to our community. The Chamber
supports the proposal and urges the Council to approve the Lease this
evening.
Rod Nevs, 1047 Balavista, Oakland, addressed the Council in opposition
to the Conference Center and to the City providing the funds for the
development.
Jim Prola, 2234 Belvedere, addressed the Council in opposition to a non-
union development. He added that, when the Council adopted the EDAC
report, the Council was supportive of bringing good jobs to San Leandro,
and this proposal is not supportive of the EDAC Report.
Lawrence Lancaster, 1132 Carpentier, addressed the Council, commenting
that this issue should be put on the ballot for a vote of the people.
Tom D'Lucca, 2320 Somerset, Castro Valley; President of Carpenters'
Local #713 in Hayward and President of the Alameda County Building
Trades Council, addressed the Council on behalf of Barry Lubowviski, the
Secretary/Treasurer, for his children and his grandchildren. He
indicated his opposition to the Conference Center, stating it will not
provide appropriate jobs. He, also, stated you cannot rely on the
developer's word, and the Council should put this decision off until the
developer can negotiate further with the labor representatives.
Dale Reed, 1560 Daily Court, Representing the Industrial Roundtable
Chamber Group, addressed the Council in support of the Conference
Center. He added that the Council will go down in history as a Council
with vision. He feels this Center will boost the industrial sector of
the City and that it will provide for a better return on the City's
money.
Audrey Albers, 2037 Marina Court, addressed the Council, in agreement
with the comments opposing the Conference Center. She expressed
concerns with traffic and other impacts it will have on the homes on
Marina Boulevard and Fairway Drive.
