Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 7 -
March 2, 1998
Larry Norry, 2532 Williams Street, addressed the Council stating, if
they do not understand the whole deal, the Council should not vote on
it. He questioned violations in the Brown Act as it related to meetings
on this issue. He feels this issue should be put on the ballot and
voted on by the citizens of the City. He urged the Council to vote "No"
on this proposal tonight.
J. G. Sanders, 4600 Marina Boulevard, addressed the Council with
concerns regarding traffic and the impact of large trucks on the
street's infrastructure. He also feels the Conference Center name
should not have "San Francisco" in it.
Tom Guarino, 14177 Seagate Drive, Representing the San Leandro Chamber
of Commerce, addressed the Council, stating this Center will jump start
the local job base and economy for our community. He commented on how
the American Golf Corporation was attracted to our community because of
this project. He feels this is part of the Council's Vision Statement
and that this Center would provide dollars imported into the community.
He thanked staff for all their work in obtaining this proposal and
thanked the developer for hanging in there.
Ann Hague, 1102 San Rafael Street, addressed the Council, stating the
City will not have another opportunity like this one. She doesn't want
to see just another restaurant there. She is not pro anything, but this
seems to be a beautiful and exciting project for the City.
Vera Ayers, 381 Melvin Court, addressed the Council, stating she is
supportive of an initiative against the Conference Center. She feels
the City should not be using taxpayers' funds as a bank and loaning it
out.
Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, addressed the Council, stating he was
before the Council three years ago, and the City was saying they were
broke. The City then approved an emergency utility tax and, also, got
bonds to build the new City Hall. He feels taxpayers' money could be
better spent in the City. He expressed concerns with infrastructure
improvements and added that there are too many loose ends on this
project. He feels the developer could get 100% financing if he wanted
too.
Christine Picaro, 12935 Neptune Drive, addressed the Council, stating
the funds expended on the Conference Center would bring in new business;
traffic issues would be addressed; and the Center would be an asset to
the Marina. This proposal will bring in money for other things in the
City. She urged the Council's support.
The following Resolution was then introduced:
The Council recessed at 8:40 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.
