Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 10 -
San Leandro Economic Development Agency Joint Meeting - April 6, 1998
Vice Mayor Loeffler concluded by commenting on the condition of the
fields maintained by the schools. He stated that it is incumbent on
government officials to come up with some kind of an agreement on who
maintains that green space, as the community tends to look toward the
City in that matter. He added that the School District needs to step
up and share the responsibility.
6. Council Member Galvan asked if the Council would be interested in
taking positions on ballot issues and/or propositions on the State
ballot.
The Mayor responded that Proposition 226 was referenced as one
measure to consider taking a position on. It was noted staff will
get information regarding Proposition 226 to the Council.
7. Council Member Polvorosa commented further on his attendance at the
Girls' Bobby Sox Opener Event.
8. The Mayor commented in response to Council comments and noted that
the Council would be recognizing Linda Granger and Pat Hearst at an
upcoming Council Meeting.
Mayor Corbett reported on her attendance at Opening Day Ceremonies at
the various Little Leagues and Bobby Sox Leagues. She noted her
pride in San Leandro and said it is a community that participates at
all levels. She commended everyone who gets involved - from parents
to sponsors.
Mayor Corbett continued by commenting on the recent Youth Summit and
commended the young people for bringing forth difficult issues and
trying to come up with solutions.
Mayor Corbett stated she appreciates those persons who participated
in the Paramedics' Program and congratulated them on their
graduation.
In conclusion, the Mayor expressed her concern that comments had been
made that youth do not have a right to participate in the
governmental/election process. She noted youths have a right to form
a PAC, should they wish to do so, and to participate in the election
process at whatever level they choose - noting that youth are
citizens, too.
The Mayor, in response to Council Member Polvorosa's request,
commented that the Council would be adjourning the meeting this
evening in memory of Robert T. Brooks, who was a very active
community member and involved in local service organizations.
