MINUTES Page 9 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-May 4, 2009 <br />Councilmember Prola stated that he would like to ensure that bike lanes are <br />constructed both parallel and perpendicular to the ingress and egress to the <br />Marina. He noted that the Marina will likely receive more bicycle traffic once the <br />Marina and the Bay Trail Slough Bridge are developed. <br />12. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Councilmember Reed congratulated Councilmember Gregory on his successful Town Hall <br />Meeting on the future of San Leandro Hospital. She commented that she attended the <br />Democratic Convention in Sacramento. Councilmember Reed reminded everyone about the <br />May 19 Special Election, which has not been well-publicized. <br />Councilmember Starosciak thanked Vice Mayor Stephens for his excellent representation <br />over the past year, and stated that she is honored to assume the role of vice mayor for the <br />upcoming year. Councilmember Starosciak commented that she and Councilmember Souza <br />will graduate from the Citizens Police Academy on Wednesday night. <br />Councilmember Prola commented that he attended the April 29 Town Hall Meeting on the <br />future of San Leandro Hospital. He expressed concern that San Leandro Hospital will lose its <br />emergency room, and that an attempt will be made to locate Fairmont Hospital's acute care <br />facility there. Councilmember Prola commented that he attended the Taste of San Leandro; <br />the Estabrook Senior Housing groundbreaking; and the Creekside Plaza groundbreaking. He <br />commented favorably on the green building features used on the Estabrook project, and <br />thanked the staff that had input on the project. Councilmember Prola congratulated <br />Councilmember Starosciak on her election as vice mayor. <br />Vice Mayor Stephens commented on the many news stories about San Leandro that have <br />been recently published in the Argus newspaper. He remarked that San Leandro has a lot of <br />current activity underway during a down economy. Vice Mayor Stephens congratulated his <br />colleagues, and previous City Councils, for their hard work to make San Leandro a center of <br />activity in Alameda County. <br />Councilmember Souza thanked Vice Mayor Stephens for the wonderful job he did in <br />representing the Council as vice mayor. She commented on her church's food pantry, <br />observing that the number of recipients has grown, and that many non-church members in the <br />community have volunteered to help. Councilmember Souza commented on a letter from the <br />Washington Manor Homeowners Association regarding Measure WW funding, on several <br />organized soccer games being played at Marina Park over the weekend, and on the City's <br />Compost Giveaway program. She attended the Taste of San Leandro, which is a fundraiser <br />for Leadership San Leandro, and she praised both the event and the program. Councilmember <br />Souza requested that tonight's meeting be adjourned in memory of Mike Shannon, who <br />coached many San Leandro sports teams. She commented on a vacancy at Marina Square, <br />and suggested that perhaps Trader Joes could locate there. <br />Councilmember Gregory congratulated incoming Vice Mayor Starosciak and thanked <br />outgoing Vice Mayor Stephens. He congratulated Councilmember Reed and her fiance on the <br />
