Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 10 -
San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Meeting - August 18, 1997
Lou Filipovich, 15375 Laverne Drive, addressed the Council regarding the
Policy Committee Meeting and noted he has a problem with when and why
the Mayor wants a raise. He feels the issue should be left to the
voters and for the next election process. He further commented on the
Real Estate Property Tax issue and noted he had asked that the Council
remove the tax, but they chose not to do so. He feels that issue should
be placed on the ballot, as well. He concluded by questioning Item 6.E
on the Consent Calendar, Resolution of the San Leandro Redevelopment
Agency approving a contractual services agreement with Keyser Marston
Associates, Inc., and asked what they are being paid for, exactly.
Laverne Anderson, 1495 - 159th Street, addressed the Council, indicating
Cypress Street is not going to be tarred this year because staff feels
it is supposedly in good enough shape. He concluded by commenting on
the number of drivers running red lights in the community.
Elizabeth Cooper, 1473 Daily Drive, addressed the Council regarding the
proposed change in the Mayor's salary and suggested the item be
postponed for additional public input and/or put the issue on the ballot
for the next election.
Wafaa Aborashed, 692 Tudor Road, representing the Davis West
Neighborhood Group, addressed the Council, stating that their community
is getting bombarded with everything, airplane noise, traffic, and noise
from trains. She voiced concerns with traffic and pedestrian safety and
suggested the City consider a shuttle bus for persons into the downtown
area. She commented briefly on the discontinuation of school bus
service and she would like to see it brought back into the community.
Council Member Lothrop commented briefly on the Council's previous
action to have staff address and form a committee to review traffic
issues within District 6. Wafaa Aborashed expressed an interest in
serving on that committee.
Vice Mayor Loeffler commented briefly on how the San Leandro Unified
School District no longer has any school buses, and the City has no
jurisdiction over the School District.
Harold Perez, addressed the Council regarding pollution in the Davis
West Area, commenting that the Bay is becoming more and more polluted.
He recently read an article in the newspaper regarding additional
pumping of sewage into San Leandro Bay. He encouraged the Council to
discuss the matter and do something about it.
Council Member Galvan reported that what he is referring to is the
project that has been ongoing for several years to provide additional
capacity for the growth that is happening out in the Livermore/
Pleasanton valley. The wastewater would come through the EBDA system,
we would sell to them the excess capacity we have, and it would then be
discharged into the deep water discharge outfall in the Bay. It will
not be treated at our facility and will not be going into the shallow
