December 21, 2009 <br />Section 4: Transportation and Land Use <br />^ Increase urban forest canopy. Maximize tree planting as part of public open space and <br />street improvements. Calculate GHG emissions reduction from urban forest sequestration <br />utilizing the Climate Action Reserve Forest Protocol. American Forests is anon-profit <br />organization that offers grants to fund tree planting projects. American Forests' Global <br />ReLeaf Grant program could provide funding to increase urban forest canopy. <br />Adopt an Urban Agriculture Ordinance. The ordinance would amend the Zoning Code to <br />allow beekeeping, and expand limited animal husbandry (including the keeping of chickens) <br />and limited commercial horticulture (to facilitate the development of urban Community <br />Supported Agriculture) in certain residential districts. Currently these uses are not permitted <br />in most residential districts. The ordinance may also designate areas for community <br />gardens with new zoning regulations. <br />^ Provide education and outreach regarding benefits and best practices of growing <br />food in San Leandro. Promote local gardening through programs such as Community <br />Supported Agriculture (CSA) that employ sustainable methods of providing food to <br />consumers. <br />^ Allow multi-unit residential projects to provide street-level public open space in lieu <br />of some required on-site private open space. Providing public open space promotes <br />visual appeal and community gathering places, which are important components of <br />pedestrian-oriented communities. <br />Page 38 <br />
