Vines and shrubs <br />should be selected to obscure walls <br />and fences that surround these ar- <br />eas <br />Along a sidewalk, tightly planted <br />shrubs should be used to physically <br />and visually separate pedestrians <br />from parking areas and reinforce the <br />edge of the street. Low plantings <br />(1'-3') are recommended so that ve- <br />hicles on the street can still see into <br />the parking areas. <br />Accent trees and shrubs should <br />be used to emphasize places of im- <br />portance such as a crosswalk, an <br />entrance, or a recreation area. <br />Landscape materials should be <br />used to complement buildings, such <br />as raised planters or pots at en- <br />trances, vines pockets at the base of <br />columns or posts, and vertical <br />San Leandro Downtown Plan & Urban Design Guidelines October 2000 <br />growth to cover large expanses of <br />blank walls.
