• Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 15, 1996 Page - 4 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
D. Cary Walker, 471 Santa Monica, Mission Bay Mobilehome Park, said it was
not necessary for four people to fly to Washington to discuss dredging;
a phone call to Pete Stark would have been sufficient. He spoke
regarding loans to the automall project, the employee furlough, and
employee salary increases over the last three years. He said the City
Manager makes more money than anyone in the State except the Governor.
E. Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said opposing the Citizen Self -
Defense Act opposes citizens' ability to defend themselves. He said
there are over 200 million firearms and a lot of people who never
commit crimes. He said criminals already carry guns. People don't
want to violate the law but want a chance to carry firearms. He said
it is impossible for him to obtain a concealed firearms permit because
of all the requirements. A lot of people want the chance to defend
themselves without breaking the law.
F. Betsy Venters, 1322 Castro Street, asked why the East 14th Street
median is in the budget if it has not been decided if it's going to be
built. The City Manager said funds for the current year are for
planning and development. He said the majority of the project cost
would have to come from State funds not allocated yet.
G. Rick Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, said Friends of San Leandro Creek is
donating a bench to Root Park. He thanked the City for hosting a
barbecue for the cleanup. He thanked Kathy Ornelas for working on the
Target Cleanup; he noted twenty -one 50 -pound totes and a tree were
removed. Target employees did the work, Target Stores contributed
plants, and the transfer station donated removal. He said Target is
now looking for a house to paint.
H. Joel DeWitt, 1458 - 138th Avenue, said the Police Department cannot be
everywhere. He said people properly equipped who understand weapons
may be appropriate. The Council should consider recommending options.
I. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, said it is a problem when a City
based on non - partisan elections gets involved in anything going on in
the State. He said he supports the Roberts Landing Maintenance
District as long as anything that relates to taxes gets the people's
approval. He said he doesn't want assessments to affect any other
homeowners in San Leandro.
J. John Sullivan, 17760 Sweetbriar Place, Castro Valley, said he owns and
manages apartments in downtown San Leandro. He submitted a document
regarding comparable refuse rates. He said San Leandro's garbage rates
are higher than Hayward and Oro Loma Sanitary District. He said there
is a big disparity for apartment buildings, and there should be further
opportunity for discussion.
