Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 22, 1996 Page - 3 -
CITY COUNCIL SWEARING -IN CEREMONIES (continued)
A. Shelia Young. Council Member. District 2. Council Member Young said
the election was the single most important thing she has ever done in
her life. She wished her father were here; she inherited her strength
from him and her integrity from her mother. She said she feels anxious
and grateful. She is resolved to be committed to bring to the City the
things she promised. She thinks she can move business and the
community together. She praised those who have paved the way and feels
we can make our own mark. She introduced her husband, Irish Lochran,
and said he has been a tower of strength. She introduced her son and
daughter -in -law, Danny and Vivian, and her grandson, JD. She thanked
those involved in her campaign for their work and support. She also
thanked the other three candidates for District 2 for continuing on in
the fight, and she wished them well. She congratulated Mission Bay
Mobilehome Park for having the highest turnout of any precinct in the
City. She thanked all of the citizens for voting for her or for
someone else. She said your right to vote is one of the most important
things you can do. She thanked City staff and the current Council for
their hard work and strength in making decisions.
B. Bob Glaze. Council Member. District 4. Council Member Glaze said the
campaign came from the heart. He thanked one of the most important
people in his life and his greatest supporter, his wife Teresa, and his
children, Crystal and Brian. He introduced his mother -in -law, Angie,
and her husband, Tom; his father -in -law, Don; his sister, Renee, her
husband, Rick, her daughter, Susan, and his great- nephew, Kylie. He
thanked everyone involved in his campaign. He said he wants to make
the community a better place. He feels he made a mark that's been
positive and progressive, and he will continue to do so in the coming
years. He said accomplishments have not been made without the help,
assistance, and support of City leaders and quality staff. He said he
had the pleasure of seeking advice from some of the finest citizens
that have cared more about this community than themselves. He said
this is a new chapter, with new challenges and hopes, and we must cast
away the need to make us great and move to make San Leandro great. We
need to seek the truth and become involved. Rumors, misinformation,
mistrust, and apathy have divided the City. We must come together on
common ground to make San Leandro a better place to live, work, and
play. We need to invest in our youth; they are our future. We must
ensure they get quality schools, playgrounds, and leisure activities
and should ensure that our Economic Development Program includes
elements that will attract and maintain families.
C. Joanne Lothrop. Council Member. District 6. Council Member Lothrop
said the campaign was an amazing experience. She said she started out
wanting to bring youth and retired people together as a Council Member
and feels she was successful in doing so in her campaign. Many young
•
men and women and retired people spent hours on the phone and leaving
flyers on doors. She thanked them for all their hard work and effort.
