Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 22, 1996 Page - 4 -
CITY COUNCIL SWEARING -IN CEREMONIES (continued)
She introduced her mother, Marie Lothrop, and said her father passed
away two years ago. She said her father and the late Mayor Karp teased
her into running for office, and she would not have been successful
without the incredible love and guidance of her father. She thanked
Angelo, for his work as treasurer and for the other important things in
her life; her daughter, Kristin; and stepsons, Todd and Stefan. She
thanked her "secret weapon," the Alta Mira Club. She said this is a
successful city made up of a number of components. She said more input
from the community is needed. She noted she had asked Larry Norry to
take charge of a District 6 advisory group to focus on the Marina and
hopes he will be one of the first to help encourage citizens to be more
involved.
8. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Myers congratulated the new Council Members. He
reviewed the many accomplishments of the City during his term of office
and said such accomplishments are dreams to other cities, but are a
reality in San Leandro. He thanked City staff for making his job
easier. He thanked his fellow Council Members for working with him and
thanked the citizens of San Leandro. He thanked his family for their
support and, most of all, his wife of 33 years, Michal. He also
thanked his son, Tim; daughter -in -law, Brenda; and granddaughter,
Corinna. He said he was honored to serve.
B. Vice Mayor Kerr said this has been a hard - working Council that has
accomplished a great deal. He said there was great cooperation from
the Mayor and staff. He said the past four years have been
interesting, some experiences satisfying and exciting, some efforts
fruitless and disappointing. He discussed his first two years on the
Council with Mayor Karp and said they understood and respected each
other. He said, when he became a Council Member he promised to work
toward 14 issues; he was successful on some, not on others. He said
the economy of government was his main concern, and he wanted the City
to balance and work within its income; instead fees have been raised
nine times and debt created through bonds. He felt savings could have
been achieved through consolidations but these were thwarted through
publicly expressed resentment of the Oro Loma Sanitary District. He
said he did not receive respect from his fellow Council Members. He
said one of his pursuits was to build a sports complex and meet the
needs of youth and said parks are currently used for sports and should
be returned to their original use as family parks. He said his most
pleasant experience has been as Vice Mayor, working with Mayor Corbett.
She is hard working, has the best interests of the community at heart,
and deserves the support of the Council. He enjoyed representing the
City at diverse activities where the common denominator was a strong
devotion to heritage and to the United States. He and his wife,
Eleanor, look forward to traveling. He wished the new Council Members
success.
