• Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 6 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - August 19, 1996
4.22 James Crew, 18 Crow Canyon Court, San Ramon, said he felt there was
no reason for the City Council to support the ordinances or
participate in gun legislation. He said if the tax ordinance
pertained to only one gun dealer then there would be litigation.
4.23 Ruben Vargas, 564 East 14th Street, stated the City Council was not
defending the Constitution; he does not support the ordinances.
4.24 Susan Riskind - Poulsen, 182 Sunnyside Drive, stated she was against
putting guns in children's hands. This issue was not unconstitutional
but is limiting an unsafe firearm. The rights of people include
everyone.
4.25 Ken Pimentel, 3034 Revere Avenue, Oakland, stated that gun crime is
a public health issue. He supports the ordinances.
4.26 Donald Beeler, 18857 California Street, Castro Valley, stated that to
ban Saturday Night Specials is to ban small handguns; he stated that
this was racism.
4.27 William Rae, 909 Shorepoint Court, Alameda, said he is against
symbolism, that this is too small a percentage of crime to make a
difference, and stated that later on all guns will be banned.
4.28 Doug Spittler, 1510 Fernside, Alameda, said this was a general war
against guns and asked what was the purpose of the ordinances. He
believes the opposite effect will occur.
4.29 Terry Ferris, 115 Turlock Way, Hayward, asked if the City was
receiving funds from the Corridor Project and asked what the Council
would like to accomplish with the ordinances. He suggested to take
a survey of the community first, before deciding, and offered to
assist.
4.30 Tim Heath, 15132 Crosby Street, stated he could not get an answer as
to why the ordinances were needed. If this is a safety issue, why
are police officers exempt. City Attorney Meyers stated that a staff
report would be made later in the evening to answer the questions.
4.31 James Solbakken, 883 Island Drive, Alameda, said he considered this
a secret law, and the Council does not know what they are doing with
this issue.
4.32 Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said this was symbolic only,
suggested the Council do something legitimate and go after the
criminals and the plea bargaining system, and is opposed to the gross
receipts tax.
4.33 Michele Walsh, 181 Best Avenue, said she is concerned about public
safety, supports the City Council in taking a stand, and urged them
to vote in favor of the ordinances.
4.34 Emery McGuire, 872 Serra Drive, said he is in favor of banning junk
guns.
