Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 7 - <br /> Redevelopment Agency Meeting - August 19, 1996 <br /> 4.35 Jim Prola said Saturday Night Specials are not needed to defend a <br /> home, it is ridiculous to cite the Constitution, and sportsmen have <br /> to be supportive of gun legislation. <br /> 4.36 Julia Machado, 1711 Russ Avenue, did not speak, but submitted a note <br /> of support for the ordinances. <br /> 4.37 MaryBeth Barloga, 346 Oakes Boulevard, stated support for the <br /> ordinances, especially SNS, and requested that the revenue generated <br /> by the gross receipts tax be allocated to anti - violence programs at <br /> the schools. <br /> At 9:10 p.m. the Mayor called for a five- minute break. <br /> 4.38 Stephanie Turner, 128 Euclid Avenue, cited a shooting incident on <br /> Euclid Avenue, near Washington Elementary School, and is in support <br /> of the ordinances because this is a beginning to curb violence. <br /> 4.39 Andrew McGuire, 922 Rodney Drive, noted the statistics related to <br /> Saturday Night Specials, stated the 2nd Amendment does not guarantee <br /> the right to own a gun, and said the gross receipts tax is like a <br /> users' tax. He is in support of the ordinances. <br /> 4.40 Beverly Johnson, 1132 Carpentier Street, said she was against the <br /> sale of Saturday Night Specials. <br /> 4.41 Earl Johnson, 1132 Carpentier Street, urged the City Council to pass <br /> the ordinances, and said it is important to save the children and <br /> keep them away from criminals. <br /> 4.42 Jack Walsh, 181 Best Avenue, said people need to be involved in City <br /> government, and he supports the ordinances. <br /> 4.43 Lorraine Dorn, 293 Elsie Avenue, left before speaking, but submitted <br /> a note of support for the ordinances. <br /> 4.44 Don Cobb, 442 Beverly Avenue, made references to history and supports <br /> the ordinances. <br /> 4.45 Carey Walker, 471 Santa Monica, stated that guns are always on the <br /> streets, and he supports keeping criminals in jail. He asked about <br /> the color of the new streetlights. He is against Walmart because it <br /> will take away jobs from the downtown; and he feels there is not <br /> adequate access to the Westgate Center. <br /> 4.46 Deane Calhoun, 3012 Summit Avenue, Oakland, Director of Youth Alive, <br /> thanked the City Council for supporting the three ordinances. <br /> 4.47 Thea Perrino, 434 Woolsey Avenue, is a member of Women Against Gun <br /> Violence and supports the ordinances. <br /> 4.48 Ann Lyman, 95 Oakmont Avenue, Piedmont, Representing the League of <br /> Women Voters and Women Against Gun Violence, cited an example of a <br /> toddler with a gun and supports the ordinance. <br />
