Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 12 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - October 7, 1996
4. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Public Comments are limited to 5 minutes per person. The public is invited
to make any comments related to Agenda items, or other items of public
interest, at this time.
4.1 Tony Santos, 14495 Nassau Road, asked the Council to monitor the
Oakland Airport expansion project. He asked them to reconsider their
vote on the ice rink. He said the funds had been placed in the
budget, and they should do it for the children of San Leandro. He
said if they reconsidered he would donate 5500 in support of the
activity.
Mayor Corbett asked for additional information regarding the Oakland
Airport. Mr. Santos asked to be informed of any public forum related
to the expansion project.
4.2 Ken Pon, 2762 Lakeview Drive, President of the Downtown Business
Association, spoke in favor of the ice rink. He said he was
surprised at their previous vote since the funds had been budgeted
earlier in the year. He said he would have been at the previous
meeting if he had known there was a change in their thoughts about
the ice rink. He said the DBA has gone out to look for funding, and
he agrees the City should not have to fund the entire activity. He
said that, to date, over 532,000 has been donated. He urged them to
reconsider. He said this is both an economic and a community issue.
He has looked into alternatives, but the ice rink is the most broad
based for a range of ages. He thinks the parking lot next to
Ploughman's Restaurant would be a possible site for the rink, and he
has already spoken with the tenants regarding their concerns.
4.3 Chris Ehrenberg, Latte Da Coffeehouse, said he has been collecting
donations from patrons for the ice rink, and he has an ice rink
petition. He suggested that increased marketing of the rink would
encourage greater support. He said he knew that "use by the residents
had been a concern; most of his petitioners are San Leandro
residents. He suggested banners and signage at the rink. He urged
them to reconsider and bring the ice rink back.
4.4 John Faria, 2410 Lakeview Drive, said he had provided the Council
with copies of some old photos of San Leandro from the Californian
Magazine. He will try to get copies of the magazine for the Council.
He commented on the situation with monitoring wells and the
responsibility of the East Bay Municipal Utility District. He said
they had earlier agreed not to charge the citizens and were now going
back on their word. He suggested that the Council invite a
representative to a Council meeting to discuss the issue. He is
concerned about citizens trying to monitor the wells on their own.
Council Member Glaze commented that they were aware of the original
agreement with EBMUD. He said EBMUD has stated that there is now a
new Board with a difference of opinion. He is anxious to hear from
a representative.
