Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 4 - <br /> Redevelopment Agency Meeting - October 7, 1996 <br /> 2.4 Presentation of Certificates of Commendation to Participating <br /> Students, Businesses, and School Officials in San Leandro's Pilot to <br /> School Work Program: <br /> Businesses: Humphrey Instruments, Media Copy, and Otis Spunkmeyer <br /> Students: Joe Botwill, Daniel Castro, Shaunte Clemons, Tiesha <br /> Fisher, Janae Jones, James Kelsey, Raymond Kwok, Eric Munoz, Edelmar <br /> Pilapil, Arvinder Singh, Morgan Anderson, Mike Maunakea, Joe <br /> Pettenichio, Elita Cheung, Steve Lin, and Eric Ng <br /> School Officials: Tom Himmelberg, Superintendent of Schools, San <br /> Leandro Unified School District; Leigh Akins, Principal, San Leandro <br /> High School; and Katherine Piccus, Resource Specialist. <br /> Jerry Droves, from Media Copy, Steve Williams, from Humphrey <br /> Instruments, and Jeff MacPhee, from Otis Spunkmeyer, came forward to <br /> accept Commendations from Mayor Corbett for their involvement in the <br /> School Work Program. She said the businesses had provided summer <br /> employment to youth in our community. She thanked them for their <br /> commitment to youth and to the community. <br /> Mayor Corbett invited the students attending to come forward to <br /> receive certificates. She presented them as the first group who have <br /> participated in the pilot program. She said this was a great <br /> opportunity for the students and businesses and personally <br /> congratulated each student on their involvement. <br /> Mayor Corbett invited Tom Himmelberg, Leigh Akins, and Katherine <br /> Piccus to come forward to accept Commendations for their involvement <br /> with the program. She said the success occurred due to the <br /> partnership between the School District, businesses, and the City. <br /> Leigh Akins noted Nanci Klein's involvement and said this type of <br /> program represents the future of San Leandro High School. She noted <br /> it had been recently named a California Distinguished School and that <br /> it has a bright future. <br /> 2.5 Proclamation Declaring October 1996 as Pedestrian Safety Month. <br /> Mayor Corbett read the Proclamation for Pedestrian Safety Month. <br /> Community Relations Representative Kathy Ornelas came forward and <br /> showed the updated poster with a new and expanded title to include <br /> all types of roller transportation. <br /> At this time, Mayor Corbett introduced Len Simon to provide a brief update from <br /> Washington D.C. Mr. Simon noted that the President had recently signed a bill <br /> which includes funding for the Marina Dredging Project. He summarized the last <br /> year, which included funding opportunities from the Department of Justice and the <br /> City's FEMA Award. He said San Leandro has enjoyed a good year in Washington <br /> D.C. He said this was due primarily to the teamwork between the City Council, <br /> City Manager, staff, and the Congressional delegation. He said setting clear <br /> policy direction helps in attaining results. He is looking ahead to next year <br /> with the new Congress and new Administration and anticipates another good year <br /> for the City. <br />
