DRAFT MINUTES Page 13
Cite of San Leandro Cite Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting — February 7, 2011
The City Council approved this recommendation.
C. Acknowledge the formation of a working group to provide input on the Branding
and Marketing Strategy with no more than 5 members representing the Chamber
of Commerce.
Mr. Hollister reported a concern expressed by members of the Council that the
Chamber of Commerce would have an overabundance of representation on the
proposed working group. He stated that the intent was to have inclusionary
membership, and that members of the group did not necessarily need to be
representatives from the Chamber. Mr. Hollister stated that staff recommends
acceptance of the Committee's recommendation.
Public Comments on Item 8.C.2.:
Dave Johnson, President and CEO, San Leandro Chamber of Commerce,
addressed the City Council, commenting on the increase in partnering between
cities and their Chambers of Commerce. Mr. Johnson commented on the great
cross - section of businesses in San Leandro and the purpose of the branding and
marketing campaign, which is to determine how best to grow and market our
businesses.
End of Public Comments on Item 8.C.2.
Members of the Council asked for clarification regarding the nature of the
working group, the group's composition, and the appointment process.
Business Development Manager Cynthia Battenberg described the group as a
business working group, consisting of community members and stakeholders, as
well as staff members. A branding and marketing expert would provide
facilitation to the group in developing the branding and marketing strategy. Ms.
Battenberg indicated that each Councilmember would identify two individuals to
participate on the group; and the Chamber of Commerce would have no more than
five members, including representatives from the AutoMall Dealers Association,
Bayfair Mall, and San Leandro by Design. Representation across age groups is
important, in order to most effectively utilize social media.
• Minute Order No. 2011 -040 Motion Revising Recommendation to
Change Composition of Working Group.
The City Council revised the recommendation to change the
composition of the working group, as follows:
1) Each Councilmember to recommend 2 individuals;
2) No more than 5 members recommended by the Chamber of
Commerce; and
3) 4 staff members
