Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, Portugal <br /> March 1970 Sister City relationship is established with the assistance of the UPEC. <br /> May 1989 An official visit is made to Ponta Delgada by "Dave Karp's Delegation to <br /> Ponta Delgada" (so named by Maria Cabral who organized the trip) <br /> including Mayor Karp and Mrs. Karp, Councilmembers Linda Perry and <br /> Bill Jardin, and other community members. <br /> July 3, 1989 President Joao Bosco Mota Amaral, President of the Azores, visits San <br /> Leandro. Festivities included: an afternoon reception; a ceremony at Root <br /> Park; presentations at St. Leander's Church and the UPEC; and a dinner. <br /> July 1998 Earthquake occurs in the Azores. Mayor Shelia Young renews contacts <br /> with Ponta Delgada by sending letter of concern to their Mayor. <br /> May 2000 Mayor Shelia Young, Councilmember Gordon Galvan and City Attorney <br /> Steve Meyers visit Ponta Delgada to celebrate the Festival of Santo <br /> Christo dos Milagres. An invitation is extended to Mayor Arruda to visit <br /> San Leandro for the 121 Anniversary of the UPEC. <br /> August 2001 Ponta Delgada Mayor Arruda and President of the Council Leite visit San <br /> Leandro in celebration of the UPEC's 121 annual convention. A <br /> welcome reception is hosted by the City, the visitors are given a tour of <br /> the City and Bay Area sites, the San Jose Portuguese Chamber of <br /> Commerce hosts them to lunch, and the 30 -year Sister City affiliation is <br /> commemorated at Root Park. <br /> July 2005 Mayor Berta Cabral invited Mayor Young and the City Council to visit <br /> Ponta Delgada for the 2005 Holy Ghost Festival. Unfortunately, none <br /> were able to attend. <br /> July 2006 Mayor Shelia Young visited Ponta Delgada for the Great Feast of the Holy <br /> Spirit of Ponta Delgada <br /> December 2007 Mayor Berta Cabral and staff visited San Leandro for three days. Events <br /> included tours of City Hall, Ghirardelli Chocolate and the Waste Water <br /> Treatment Plant. UPEC held a morning reception for the delegation. Staff <br /> facilitated a tour of the Five Wounds Portuguese National Church and <br /> Portuguese Historic Museum in San Jose, and a dinner and art exhibition <br /> at The Stone Gallery in Oakland. <br /> July 2008 Mayor Tony Santos traveled to Ponta Delgada for a 5 day visit during the <br /> Great Feast of the Holy Spirit. <br /> 6 <br />
