Employees.assigned to the Paramedic <br /> Program will begin the duty at the beginning of the month and will leave the <br /> assignment at the end of the month. <br /> 2. Continuing Education/Recertification: Continuing education will be <br /> provided on duty or compensated by approved overtime or compensatory time <br /> off. The Fire Department agrees to pay $500.00 to employees for recertification <br /> • as a Paramedic. . <br /> 3. Leaving the Paramedic Program: It is understood by the parties to this <br /> Understanding that all employees holding special paramedic compensation <br /> status have an obligation to maintain the status while the terms of this <br /> Understanding are in effect, unless permitted to leave the program with the <br /> approval of the Fire Chief. Employees shall have the option to leave the <br /> Paramedic Program under the following conditions: <br /> a. The Fire Department shall maintain a sufficient number of paramedics <br /> to meet the operational needs of the Fire Department. Ability to staff <br /> the program must be verified prior to permitting an employee to leave <br /> the program. <br /> b. Employees must declare their intent to participate in the Paramedic <br /> Program in writing to the Fire Chief during a specified period of each <br /> year. Declarations verifying date and time of receipt must be signed by <br /> the Fire Chief or designee. <br /> • c. An employee must be an Alameda County certified paramedic with a <br /> minimum of five years of continuous service with the Alameda County <br /> Fire Department as a paramedic. <br /> d.. Priority to leave the Paramedic Program will be based on Fire <br /> Department seniority, regardless of rank. <br /> e.. If Fire Department paramedic staffing falls below the operational level <br /> set by the Fire Chief, a certified paramedic must be available before any <br /> employee is permitted to leave the program. • <br /> f. Paramedics wishing to leave the program must obtain a current <br /> Alameda County or State Fire Marshal EMT -1 Certification. Failure <br /> to obtain or maintain the EDIT -1 will result in reassignment to a 40- <br /> hour per week non - suppression assignment until the certification is <br /> renewed. Continued failure to obtain the EMT certification may result <br /> in termination of employment, as provided in subsection D.3. above. <br /> g. Paramedics leaving the Program at their own request within 12 months <br /> of receiving a recertification bonus will repay the bonus on a pro -rated <br /> basis to the Department.
