Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - February 21, 1995 Page - 3 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
C. Anna Tandy, 96 Belleview Drive, said what has been going on has given
Bayfair a bad name. She wants San Leandro to live up to its past and
not be torn down by what's going on in the present. She's gone to
meetings where people ask what's happening in San Leandro and she had
to defend it, which she never had to do before. What's been going on
between the Council Members and the media is giving San Leandro a bad
name. In the future, they should think before they act.
D. Lisa Briones, 890 Collier Drive, said she shopped at Bayfair when she
was a kid and shops there now with her kids. She thinks it' s a safe
environment and there is a variety of shopping, a center for seniors,
and a pre-school with a waiting list. Bayfair has opened its doors for
high school students to have a safe environment for Grad Night. The
Hope Program during the holiday season drew a lot of people and was
good for the schools. Bayfair wants to be part of this community, and
what the Council and Mayor are doing with Bayfair is great.
E. Kathy Gorham, said people should be part of the solution, not the
problem. It would be naive to think Bayfair doesn't have crime that
other malls do. However, she did 80% of her Christmas shopping there,
goes to dinner with her children, lets her teenage daughter go shopping
with her friends and have lunch there, and would not if she didn't
think it was safe. She likes going there because she sees other
families of different ethnic backgrounds. She tolerates teenagers, and
they are just kids who hang out like she did. If you are a San Leandro
citizen you need to shop at Bayfair to keep tax dollars in the City.
F. Peter Stensrud, 882 Douglas Drive, a school teacher in Hayward, said
the recent radio show was the first time he heard there was a problem
at Bayfair. He has shopped there for years and never has been bothered
or had a problem. He said we need to get a realistic assessment of
problems and can't use scare tactics. Intimidation, class, race, etc. ,
are perceptions. He couldn't find merchandise he likes; ads are
directed to people who want different merchandise. A lot of the radio
program was attacks on kids. Give them places where they can go.
G. Sherryl Clifford, 136 Oakes Boulevard, said some members of ' the
community are using tactics that are the wrong ones to use. They need
to come forward with constructive criticism and a way to deal with
their complaints. The tactics they are using are sabotaging the
community and people who live here and support business in this town.
It's important as a community to support Bayfair Mall . The Chamber of
Commerce read off a very informative list of what's been going on
between the City Council and the Mall . It's important for the
community as a whole to see the list and know the positive that's
happening. She walked around Bayfair with her children and husband and
