Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - March 20, 1995 Page - 3 -
5. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Public Comments are limited to 5 minutes per person. The public is invited
to make any comments related to Agenda items (including San Leandro
Redevelopment Agency, San Leandro Parking Authority, and San Leandro
Industrial Development Authority) or other items of public interest at this
time. Comments regarding Public Hearing items will be heard during the
Public Hearing portion of the Agenda.
A. Lavern Anderson, 1495 - 159th Avenue, said there would be a ceremony on
April 30th at 2:00 p.m. at the Veterans' Memorial Building and invited
the City Council and City employees to attend. Mr. Anderson also said
the street name sign on Cypress Street at Spruce is difficult to read.
The City Manager said it would be replaced.
B. Dana Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said he would like to see a more
concerted effort between the City and the School District regarding
Earthquake Preparedness Programs and suggested programs like safe
houses on appropriate public facilities.
Mr. McClellan described the activities the City has undertaken with the
schools, including monthly meetings with the San Leandro Disaster
Preparedness Forum, which includes School District members and parents;
providing training to the schools; and helping them with their Disaster
Preparedness Program. He also said schools are identified by law as
community shelter sites during a disaster, and he described the ark
program that will go into effect in the City in the next year to store
disaster provisions.
C. Joanne Mattoon, 3810 Monterey Boulevard, asked if the Emergency Medical
Dispatch Program meant the Sheriff's Office would respond with their
fire engines instead of the City's.
Mr. Oliver explained that there would be no change to response; this
would allow the Alameda County Dispatchers to remain on the line to
improve life-saving efforts to those people making 911 calls.
D. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, thanked the City for not making
the Earthquake Preparedness Program mandatory. He said there is only
one major insurance company in California that still writes earthquake
insurance policies, and the individual homeowner will not be able to
survive if earthquake preparedness is mandatory.
Mr. Filipovich spoke regarding the March 6, City Council Minutes and
said the public cannot tell what occurred at the meeting.
Mr.Filipovich said what happens at City Council meetings does not get
out to the public, and people are not getting all of the information
they need from the meetings or City Hall .
E. Joel DeWitt, 1458 - 138th Avenue, spoke regarding Bayfair. He said the
Halcyon-Foothill Homeowners Association represents that area, and
business owners in the area feel they are being ignored and that the
deal with Bayfair is biased. He said the small store owners must be
represented as well as the large store owners. He said the City
Council should have supported a travel agency's request for a letter.
