Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 3, 1995 Page - 14 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
Mayor Corbett said the Council discussed, specifically, what to do in
the event some people might not be able to appoint in their district,
and potential commissioners could be referred to others. She said this
only applies to the Mayor's At-Large positions. She said it would be
necessary for her to hear submittal of the Council 's names first.
Council Member Perry said, if Mayor Corbett was going to appoint
someone to a position in someone's district, that Council Member should
know so there would not be duplications.
Mayor Corbett said a number of people have inquired regarding Board and
Commission seats, in response to a recent article in the San Leandro
Times. We have heard from some, some we have not. She believes it is
only fair that we give people an opportunity to respond ; and it is not
fair to tell them to contact the City if they are interested in
serving, and then say it is too late. She said some positions that are
open were open long before there was any discussion on changes on
Commissions.
Council Member Galvan said the Council has not been able to appoint
because they didn't know what would happen.
C. Council Member Perry said she served as "Principal for a Day" at
Roosevelt School and enjoyed the day. She said this is the start of a
close partnership with the schools. She had a first-hand look at
what's happening in the classroom, where technology is, the condition
of the physical plant, and a great dialogue with students.
Council Member Perry said she toured Ghirardelli , one of our treasures,
and agrees a "Chocolate Festival " or "Chocolate Day" is a good idea.
Council Member Perry said she attended the Bobby Sox opening and said
the baseball season is here in San Leandro.
Council Member Perry said the first City classes on sexual harassment
have been held. She commended staff and said this is the first of the
City's cultural diversity program.
Council Member Perry said she will send information from Sue Case of
Palo Alto regarding skateboard parks to the City Council .
Council Member Perry spoke regarding telecommunications and said the
Pressler Senate Bill (186 pages) was introduced last Thursday and
passed out of committee, 14 to 2, on the same day. She will send
information to the Council .
