Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - January 11, 1993 Page - 14 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
Kai Bender, 261 Begier Avenue, President of Creekside Neighborhood
Association, said he is frustrated and asked why the City Council is
making people go through this. He said the City Council should be
better in touch with the community. He said this is blackmail by the
developer, and the City is being bought for $500,000. He said the City
should work something out with the developer after the City of Oakland
votes on the project, and it should be better than this.
Hazel Houston, 3021 Revere Avenue, Oakland, said she was nearly killed
by vehicles on Dutton Avenue. She said the City is already in hot
water because of the Friedan property. She said she represents the
Golden Gate Audubon Society. She said over-population and overcrowding
affect the quality of life, and she doesn't want this project.
Ray Clonin, 256 Marlowe Drive, Oakland, said, if the City Council
withdraws the Appeal , they are irresponsible, unresponsive to the best
interests of the community, incompetent, and immoral . He said they
should not give up the quality of life. He said this project is
unsafe. He said he shudders to think the Council is considering
withdrawing the Appeal .
Larry Reynolds, 880 St. Mary Avenue, asked, if the MOU was accepted,
would it be a legislative or administrative decision. Steve Meyers
said he was unable to answer that question at this time. He said, if
it is a legislative act, it is subject to referendum; if it is an
administrative act, it is not subject to referendum. Mr. Reynolds said
$500,000 is an insult to the Council 's intelligence. He said the
Agreement does not even protect children walking to school . He said
the developer should be at the meeting to answer questions. He asked
why the decision had to be made tonight. He said, if the offer is
legitimate, it should still be extended after the Oakland City Council
votes. He said this looks like San Leandro is caving in to a big city
and developer who is important in the Democratic Party. He said this
decision should not be made at the last hour.
Gisela Van Puttkamer, 11344 Golf Links Road, Oakland, said the City
Council is part of the democratic process, and it does not please the
citizens that Mayor Karp is so autocratic. She said the citizens of
Oakland are furious and feel wounded because, while they are fighting
their battles, San Leandro is stabbing them in the back. She said she
was not surprised the developer would make a last-minute move, but it
was surprising that the City Council would consider the MOU before the
Thursday Oakland City Council meeting. She said it is a well -known
fact that the developer has no intention of building, but he is trying
to inflate the price the taxpayers will pay.
