Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 5, 1993 Page - 12 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued),
Council Member Corbett asked if handicap access would be made available
to the book store. Mr. Penaranda said there would be a ramp that would
lead to the front door of the store.
Mayor Karp said the parking lot should be maintained so that BART
riders do not use it as a parking lot. Mr. Penaranda said the lot can
be posted with signs, and it could also be added as a Condition.
The Hearing was then opened to the public.
Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, said he has no objection to the
project. He said, regarding parking, this is a golden opportunity, and
the Applicant should develop the parking lot to the full extent and
then lease out extra parking to BART to raise revenue. He said the
City Council should not put any hamstrings on parking.
Al Rosenga, 534 Parrott Street, speaking on behalf of the Peralta
Citizens Association, Inc. , immediate neighbors, and his family, said
he feels parking is an issue. He said many of these people will be
able to drive, and they will have gatherings there. He said the
training facility will be used for the local chapter as well as people
from other areas. He said these are very nice people and he has talked
with them extensively. He said he sees no problems and no one in the
area has objections to the project.
In response to a question from Mayor Karp, Mr. Rosenga said overflow
parking from BART also parks on the streets in the area. He said, with
proper posting of signs, parking can be monitored on the lot and
neighbors can help.
In response to a question from Council Member Kerr, Mr. Rosenga said he
does not anticipate any problems with users of the facility parking on
the street. Mr. Rosenga pointed out that DCARA does need some
financial support and encouraged people to volunteer to help them in
any way possible.
There being no further comments from the public, on motion of Council
Member Polvorosa, seconded by Council Member Kerr, and carried
unanimously, the Public Hearing was closed.
