Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 7, 1993 Page - 14 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
The Hearing was then opened to the public.
Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, asked if this Tax is collected
individually by the utility companies. Mr. Jermanis said it is, and
the City receives payments from each of the entities. Mr. Filipovich
said the utilities are having problems collecting these taxes and are
also badgering the Public Utilities Commission to increase rates to
take care of the cost of collecting taxes. He said the solution is out
of the City's hands because he doesn't know how the City can fight PG&E
and the telephone company. He said the utilities are making money off
collecting the tax because it accumulates. He said this also relates
to sales tax.
Anna Maria Clementez, said in the year 2000 it will be space only. She
said we are on Earth. She said she was robbed in 1993. She said
people look at her and throw things at her because she is Spanish. She
said she was born and lives in Oakland.
David Johnson, 343 Farrelly Drive, said he is a relatively new resident
of San Leandro. He said the graph that was shown was a worst-case-
scenario scare tactic. He said he finds it hard to believe the City
would lay off six policemen, yet there is $1 million in the budget to
resurface streets. He said it seems money could be found in the
budget, instead of closing pools, etc. He said the Task Force work was
done last year, and matters have changed in the past three or four
months. He said the Utility Tax doesn't count what Clinton will do,
such as a BTU tax, etc.
Council Member Perry asked Mr. Johnson if he was aware street repair
funds came from the Federal Government and through the ISTEA program.
Mr. Johnson said he was not.
There being no further comments from the public, on motion of Council
Member Kerr, seconded by Council Member Myers, and carried unanimously, .
the Public Hearing was closed.
