Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 7, 1993 Page - 22 -
MAYOR DAVE KARP (continued)
to cry in the middle of a meeting. Mayor Karp said, "Give him to me. I'm a
grandpa; I know what to do, " and Ryan stopped crying when he went to Dave. She
said Dave will never be forgotten for his warmth. He was always there for
people. He did a lot of wonderful things that we see the results of, but what
is really important is that he touched people's hearts.
Council Member Kerr said Mayor Karp will be missed deeply. He said Mayor Karp
came to his house to talk about infrastructure and solutions toward alleviating
traffic congestion in the western part of San Leandro. He said he and Mayor Karp
pursued an alternate plan for the north-south freeway through the Grass Roots
Action Board Traffic Advisory Committee, formed by Mayor Karp. He said Dave
became a knowledgeable expert on transportation and was active on regional and
national agencies, promoting great ideas that will probably be implemented in
coming years. He noted that the Congestion Management Agency, on which Mayor
Karp served, respect him and had a moment of silence for Mayor Karp at their
meeting. He said Mayor Karp had a great interest in people's cultures and
problems. He knew San Leandro like a book. His presence was felt in any meeting
he attended. He spoke intelligently and suggested reasonable solutions or
acceptable compromises. He was a great campaigner and organizer. He faced
challenge with the phrase, "We'll roll up our sleeves. " Council Member Kerr said
the City Council , City government, and its citizens must now follow Dave's
commitment to "roll up our sleeves, " and proceed in his fashion for the
betterment of San Leandro. That is what Dave would have wanted.
Council Member Perry said, when she first joined the Council , she was the first
woman in a long time; and she and Mayor Karp had many discussions about it and
a special relationship working those types of issues out. She said she will
always remember Dave as a doer in everything. She appreciated and respected his
involvement in the community. She said Dave and Marcia were always everywhere
and said she spent many hours with him at various events. She remembered how
much Dave enjoyed challenges and his sense of fun and spirit of adventure. She
said he loved gadgets and had his blood pressure tested three times so he could
adjust his new watch that had a blood pressure gauge on it. She said Mayor Karp
loved lobbying efforts, and she will always remember his techniques and what he
taught her. He taught her that it wasn't important how they remembered you, but
that they remembered your name when you came in later to get the dollars. She
remembered his habit of giving out five-pound Ghirardelli chocolate bars, large
hundred dollar bills, and joke glasses when they lobbied on the Hill . She
reminisced about his ability to get into press conferences and meetings. She
said Dave Karp was a doer - give him a challenge and he would overcome it. She
said he was able to get press releases and give them to the Council . She
remembered being Vice Mayor and all the fun activities, such as the Fire Bucket
Brigade, when she dressed up as a Cherry Coke Can and rode in a fire truck to
challenge the Hayward Fire Department. She said he was her mentor in the area
of transportation and said they worked together on the League of California
Cities Transportation Committee and the National League. She said he presented
many firsts, including the first trip as a Sister City to Portugal . She
remembered carrying the San Leandro flag for five hours over cobblestone streets.
•
