Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 7, 1993 Page - 23 -
MAYOR DAVE KARP (continued)
•
She said Mayor Karp gave a challenge, extended people's limits, and expanded
their horizons. She remembered a meeting with the President of Portugal and said
Mayor Karp loved ceremonies. She said the President of Portugal visited San
Leandro. She said Dave cared deeply about people, such as the human rights of
the people of East Timor. She said Dave and Marcia were always there for her,
including through the cancer of her parents, the death of her father, and helping
her mentally handicapped brother. She said Dave had a compassionate side that
many people didn't know, and they supported one another. She said she will never
forget Dave or Marcia Karp, and it will leave a deep void in her heart.
City Attorney Steve Meyers said Dave Karp demonstrated and embodied many
qualities, but the two which stand out are courage and leadership. He said one
did not have to agree with Dave on all issues to acknowledge that he had the
courage of his convictions and the will to lead his community to a better
tomorrow. He said this community owes a debt of gratitude to Dave Karp which can
never be repaid. He said Dave Karp would never expect it to be repaid, because
he loved every minute of the 16 years of his job.
City Manager Mike Oliver said one of the highlights of working with Mayor Karp
was that you never knew who was going to come through the door. He said the
press, dignitaries, and calls from the President could all happen. He said
people came because they knew Dave and knew he would help them. He would get
behind and support all kinds of causes. He said the commitment Mayor Karp showed
to his work and to the people that came to the office and to the City was
genuine, and there was a lot of respect on Mayor Karp's part for everyone, which
was shared mutually. He said it was a very graphic lesson in humanity to work
with Mayor Karp.
Michele Bernson expressed her condolences to the City Council and to staff. She
said Mayor Karp did a lot of little things. She said she misses seeing him when
she waits at the bus stop and misses the little acknowledgements he made. She
remembered when she challenged him to sit in the dunking booth at St. Leanders,
and he joined in with a good spirit. She said his spirit brought the little kid
inside of her out. She said he gave her fatherly advice when she went to
Washington, D.C. She said she will remember the little things he did.
Mike Pretto said he will miss Dave. He said Dave had time for everybody, which
is a trait we should cherish.
Rick Richards said he first met Dave when Dave ran for Mayor. He said we have
lost a predominant figure in the City, but the veteran has also lost a person who
was very concerned with veterans' affairs. He said he was thankful for getting
to know Dave and being able to discuss his experiences in Vietnam with him. He
said Mayor Karp opened his arms and heart to all the veterans in the City, and
he will be missed.
