Minutes - Joint San Leandro City Council/ Page - 13 -
San Leandro Redevelopment Agency/
Alameda County Board of Supervisors Meeting - June 28, 1993
JOINT PUBLIC HEARING (continued)
I . Richard Hancock, 2066 Manchester Road, Ashland Area, said much of the
testimony at the previous workshops has moved the focus away from its
basic intention, which is to improve the quality of living. He said he
is in favor of improving the commercial district and improving revenues
which fund programs. This specific plan in the unincorporated area
can, over the long term, provide the growth in tax revenue. This is a
significant project. It is the type of project that many communities
would be very envious of. It behooves the people in these areas to
support this project and to see that this project succeeds. The people
who have spoken vehemently about the proposal have the luxury of
dealing with only one property. We have to deal with the community as
a whole. He urged the members to keep the community's main interest as
their focus.
J. Robert Batnick, 2014 Evergreen, 19306 Castro Valley, said he owns two
pieces of property on Washington Avenue. He said he originally
approached this idea in a negative fashion and felt it was
unbeneficial , and it would ruin the use of his property. He said, as
a contractor, in the past he found the City difficult to deal with at
times, including the building department and the Redevelopment Agency,
and he was hurt by them. He talked to several people that said "Find
out, go down and talk to them. " He found that they were very amendable
to his specific problems. He was given some written reassurance that
things wouldn't change and was showed the benefits of this project. He
said he totally supports this project.
K. Dan Bergen, Broker for White Commercial Real Estate, said he represents
several property owners including offices, industrial , and retail
properties, especially in the Davis Street and Alvarado area. He
supports and appreciates the work on the City's part to retain
businesses, jobs, and tax revenues for this City versus everyone going
to other areas. We need an important step and this is it.
L. Tom White, Broker for White Real Estate, said he welcomes the
opportunity to speak. He said he has been an industrial real estate
broker working the 1-880 corridor for 20 years. The neighboring city
to the north has deteriorated over time, and he doesn't want to see it
take place here. He said we have the opportunity for that to happen if
we don't take action. He said Mayor Karp saw the need for economic
development, and to continue that encouragement, we need a plan like
this one. He urged the members to support it.
