Matter of Report from Dave Karp Memorial City Council Subcommittee.
Attachment: Letter from Library-Historical Commission recommending
that the Senior Meeting Facility be named in honor of former Mayor
David S. Karp.
Council Member Kerr reported that on Saturday, August 7, at 1 :00 p.m. ,
the Senior Meeting Facility at the Community Library would be
rededicated and would be named the Dave Karp Meeting Facility. He said
the Municipal Band would be performing. He said a large picture of
Dave Karp will be donated. He said the Committee also recommended the
Fairway/Aladdin Overcrossing be named in honor of Dave Karp. He said
there have been some complaints that there are former Mayors and
Council Members in whose honor various facilities should be named. He
said the City Council policy says facilities can be named posthumously
if the person made a significant contribution or for a living person
who has donated toward construction of a facility. He said the Library
Commission has had a long-standing policy of naming rooms in memory of
deceased persons who have made contributions to the Library. He said
the Committee's recommendation meets both Council and Library
Commission policy.
Council Member Perry asked if it was the Committee's recommendation
that these two items, and these two items only, be named after Dave
Karp. She said others have suggested that perhaps a room at the Marina
Community Facility might be appropriate.
