Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 25, 1993 Page - 9 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
G. Matter of Report by City Council Subcommittee to Review Compensation of
the Mayor.
Council Member Polvorosa said the Subcommittee, consisting of himself
and Council Members Nahm and Myers, recommended that the Mayor's salary
be reduced from $2,648 to $1,500 a month and that use of the City
automobile be discontinued. He said this in no way is meant to be a
reflection on former Mayor Karp or on Mayor Faria. He said the
committee recognizes the Mayor has duties and responsibilities that are
greater than those carried out by the City Council ; and, therefore, the
Mayor's pay is recommended to be greater than that of the City Council ,
but this pay is also intended to reflect the fact that the Mayor's
position is part time.
Council Member Myers said, in determining the $1 ,500 figure, the City
Council looked at the salary in 1988, which was $1 ,200 per month, and
applied the Consumer Price Index to it for that period of time until
April 1993, which resulted in a 22% increase, and the amount was
rounded to $1 ,500. He reiterated, the committee is aware the Mayor has
•
more duties and responsibilities than the City Council and said, in no
way does this reflect negatively on the current Mayor.
Council Member Nahm said it was the intention of the committee to close
the door on the era of the full -time duties and responsibilities
carried out by Mayor Karp. He said the position of Mayor was intended
to be part time.
Mayor Faria said he was on a committee that recommended the Mayor's
salary start at $2,300 and never be dropped below that amount. He
noted there had been no raises for awhile for anyone.
It was noted that the Council had the discretion to review this matter
each year.
The following Motion was then introduced:
Minute Order No. 93-78. Matter of Report by City Council Subcommittee
to Review Compensation of the Mayor. (1315)
On motion by Council Member Polvorosa, who moved its approval , seconded
by Council Member Nahm, and carried by the following called vote, the
City Council approved lowering the Mayor's salary from $2,648 per month
to $1 ,500 per month and discontinuing use of the City automobile by the
Mayor.
AYES: Council Members Corbett, Kerr, Myers, Nahm, Perry,
Polvorosa; ( 6 )
NOES: Mayor Faria ( 1 )
ABSENT: None ( 0 )
