CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Galvan asked the City Council to explore the concept of
creating an Economic Development Committee to work with Susan McCue.
Staff was directed to prepare a report on this matter.
B. Council Member Perry congratulated Council Member Loeffler for his
receipt of the Martin Luther King Award from the San Leandro Unified
School District Affirmative Action Group, which is chaired by Nancy
Fong.
C. Council Member Polvorosa noted the recent Rotary Club fishing event at
Lake Chabot. He said five Rotary Clubs participated, 265 handicapped
people attended, and it was a very successful event.
D. Council Member Kerr reported on the Congestion Management Agency
meeting. He said the Agency approved the whole program, with the
exception of the 238 extension bypass through Hayward. He said that
would be studied further; and the $70 million on that issue would be
held up until the EIS, EIR, and alternative modes of transportation are
studied. He said the cities of Livermore and Dublin and the County of
Alameda proposed the transfer of money from the proposed East BART
Station into the Highway 84 improvements; he said this was left open
for further study. He said, basically, the Congestion Management Plan
was approved, with those two exceptions, for forwarding on to MTC. He
described a full -day workshop the Agency conducted for its members and
said it was very well done and helpful toward learning the various
ideas of the local agencies. He noted that all the members are working
together to solve transit problems in everyone's best interests.
E. Council Member Loeffler asked for a report on the sales tax generated
by Long's and Payless. John Jermanis, Finance Director, said specific
store information is proprietary and restricted under State law, but he
could provide a generic report on drug stores. Council Member Loeffler
said this information would be relevant to the Walgreen's project.
