Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - November 2, 1992 Page - 9 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
G. Council Member Polvorosa said Channel 7 News reported on a problem with
drugs and prostitution in what they said was San Leandro. He said, in
fact, the problem was in unincorporated San Leandro, and Channel 7
should correct this. Mayor Karp said a letter would be sent to Channel
7.
H. Council Member Perry commended the Library and Recreation Departments
for the October 24th Halloween Haunt. She said more than 600 children
attended, and this shows the need for this kind of program for youth in
San Leandro.
I . Council Member Faria thanked the Chamber of Commerce for the retreat.
He said it was excellent, and the public should see what happens and
how hard the Chamber works.
J. Mayor Karp said he attended five openings of train stations, from
Suisun to Santa Clara. He said he has been working on the program to
use the Southern Pacific corridor for passenger trains for the last
five years and, thanks to Tom Hannigan and others, the Capitol Corridor
has come into being. He said Propositions 111 and 116 convinced
Southern Pacific, Caltrans, and Amtrack the system would work, and it
has exceeded everyone's expectations. He encouraged people to vote for
Proposition 156, the bond act to continue rail service throughout
California.
K. Mayor Karp thanked the Chamber of Commerce for their good work on the
retreat. He said important issues were discussed with business and
said it is important to keep current businesses in San Leandro.
He discussed an article in the Daily Review which keyed in on the
Reynolds and Brown shopping center. He said Rich Riggs wrote an
article, and an editorial was also written, which said that the City
Council was going to be talking about and making decisions about the
20-acre sports complex at the Chamber retreat. He said the article
also said four Council Members would be attending the retreat and would
be breaking the Brown Act. Mayor Karp said he talked to the Chamber,
to Reynolds and Brown, and others, and none of them had talked to Rich
Riggs. He said he called Mr. Riggs, who said he made an assumption
that that's what would be talked about. Mayor Karp said this is not
good journalism. He said he had demanded a retraction and showed a
copy of the retraction which was printed. He said he talked to the
editorial staff about the erroneous reporting, and they said they did
not care.
Mayor Karp said there also was a report in the paper saying that Mayor
Karp kept track of businesses that leave San Leandro. He said he did
not have such figures. He said he keeps an inventory of all businesses
in San Leandro and said he had opened the retreat with the comment that
San Leandro has been fortunate enough to gain a lot of new businesses.
