Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - March 4, 1991 Page - 4 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
D. Motion Recommending Participation in a Peace-Tree Planting Program
Sponsored by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team.
Dennis Smith, Recreation-Human Resources Director, said the Recreation
and Parks Commission was approached by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team to
participate in a low-key project in favor of peace. He said it had been
suggested that a tree which would be in keeping with the other trees be
planted at the Memorial Grove in Marina Park and that a plaque be
installed by the group.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 91-17 (1028/2150)
MOTION APPROVING RECOMMENDATION TO PARTICIPATE
IN A PEACE-TREE PLANTING PROGRAM
SPONSORED BY THE SRI CHINMOY MARATHON TEAM
On motion by Council Member Santos who moved its approval , seconded by Council
Member Corbett and carried by the following called vote, the City Council
approved participation in a Peace-Tree Planting Program sponsored by the Sri
Chinmoy Marathon Team.
AYES: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Glaze, Perry, Polvorosa, Santos;
Mayor Karp ( 7 )
NOES: None ( 0 )
ABSENT: None ( 0 )
E. Resolution Calling for a Public Hearing on the Removal of Poles, Overhead
Wires and Associated Overhead Structures from Portions of Washington
Avenue, Lewelling Boulevard and Abutting Properties, Including
Intersecting Streets.
Council Member Faria asked why this undergrounding was coming before the
City Council at this time. He questioned whether the intersection of
Washington/Lewelling was in the Undergrounding Master Plan. He said he
thought this work was not to be done for a few more years.
Bill Silva, City Engineer, said the intersection is included in the
Master Plan of City Streets and that undergrounding of poles is provided
for. He said the undergrounding will have to be completed prior to
construction or ultimate widening of the intersection.
Council Member Faria expressed his concern regarding use of PG&E 20A
funds for this work. He asked questions regarding the cost to the
merchants and property owners in the area.
Mr. Silva said the cost to property owners would be the actual cost for
conversion for running power underground from the poles to each building.
He said the cost would probably range from $600 to $2,500. He said all
of the costs for undergrounding the poles would be paid for with 20A
funds.
