Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 20, 1991 Page - 8 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
Mayor Karp said the City did not have $14,000 available to support this
Commission, but he liked the idea of the use of volunteers.
Council Member Santos said he felt high school students had the maturity
and ability to advise adults of their needs and perspective. He said
he supports the idea but felt it was not a panacea.
Council Member Perry said when she was a member of a City Youth
Committee years ago the Committee performed some aspects of the
Committee work, such as their own minutes, and this was part of the
learning experience. She said existing staff would also be part of the
learning experience and this would be a building process.
Council Member Corbett said she felt the City could find the money for
this Commission and that the Commission was vital and must be supported
adequately.
Dick Randall , City Manager, said he had heard a number of good ideas
and comments. He said it was obvious this was an important Commission
and staff would come back to the City Council with a funding and
staffing proposal . He said a certain level of support will be necessary
to make the Commission successful .
Council Member Glaze also noted that the Commission should be
established as proposed now and the matter of adding sophomores or other
members should be looked at later.
The following Motion was then introduced:
MINUTE ORDER NO. 91-38 (2680)
MOTION ESTABLISHING A
YOUTH ADVISORY COMMISSION
On motion by Council Member Glaze who moved its approval , seconded by Council
Member Perry and carried by the following called vote, the City Council directed
the City Attorney to take all necessary steps to establish the Youth Advisory
Commission.
AYES: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Glaze, Perry, Santos;
Mayor Karp ( 6 )
NOES: None ( 0 )
ABSENT: Council Member Polvorosa ( 1 )
