Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 21, 1991 Page - 12 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
Council Member Corbett asked about the process for the SRRE review.
Mr. Taylor said a Public Hearing was required before the City Council
in order to obtain public comment, and an additional Public Hearing
would be conducted in January.
Council Member Corbett said she was glad to hear the City has not closed
the door on curbside recycling.
Council Member Perry said she feels there is community desire for
curbside recycling in the residential areas, and the community needs
that sense of participation.
Council Member Polvorosa said the San Leandro Rotary Club, as well as
local schools and the San Leandro Boys and Girls Club, regularly conduct
recycling programs.
The Hearing was then opened to the public.
Howard Kerr, 15388 Norton Street, Chair of the Integrated Waste
Management Land Committee for the Alameda County Waste Management
Authority, said San Leandro's SRRE is one of the two best in the County.
He said curbside recycling is very expensive and reduces very little.
He said one of the objectives of the SRRE is to create cost-effective
programs which can be monitored and reductions documented. He also
noted the Rotary recycling pick-up program and said the funds collected
were donated to charities in San Leandro. He said Mission Bay Mobile
Home Park also has a program and the proceeds go to Alzheimer's
research. He said he is glad to see that San Leandro is trying
something different.
Council Member Corbett said the people of San Leandro should be
congratulated for their recycling efforts.
Toni Reynolds, 880 St. Mary Avenue, said her concern regarding recycling
companies is that she has worked for recycling companies and they can
be here today and gone tomorrow. She recommended the City Council not
put all its eggs in one basket in case Scott Newest goes out of
business.
There being no further comments from the public, on motion of Council
Member Faria, seconded by Council Member Santos, and carried
unanimously, the Public Hearing was closed.
Mr. Taylor indicated no City Council action was required on this matter
at this time.
