Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - December 17, 1990 Page - 6 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
process for the Mayor for up to the eight possible years of the Mayoral
term. She said she is concerned with the problem that may exist in the
relationship of salaries for the Mayor and the Council and that the Mayor
is currently paid more than three times as much as the City Council ,yet
City Council salaries are limited by the State legislature to no more
than a 5% increase only when there is a change in membership on the City
Council . She said, in addition to salary for both the Mayor and the City
Council , other benefits should be taken into consideration.
Council Member Santos recommended that City Council salaries be increased
to $1,200 per month but said this matter would have to come before the
State legislature. He said there is intense pressure for the City
Council to keep up with all activities related to the City and many
members of the City Council sit on outside committees, in addition to
their regular City Council duties. He said he felt the City Council
Mayor's Ad Hoc Committee's report appropriately addressed the matter of
future adjustments to the Mayor's salary, pending review on an annual
basis. He said he felt the Mayor's position could not be restricted to
a part-time basis because the Mayor must attend out-of-town activities
on behalf of the City. He said he felt the recommended process allowed
the City Council to review the Mayor's salary once a year.
The following Ordinance was then introduced:
ORDINANCE NO. 90-024 (1315)
AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING COMPENSATION OF THE MAYOR
Introduced by Council Member Santos, who moved that it be passed to print,
seconded by Council Member Faria, and carried by the following called vote:
AYES: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Glaze, Perry, Polvorosa, Santos;
Mayor Karp ( 6 )
NOES: Council Member Perry ( 1 )
ABSENT: None ( 0 )
G. Motion Regarding Appointment of City Council Policy Committee.
On motion of Council Member Polvorosa, seconded by Council Member Santos
and carried unanimously, the City Council appointed Mayor Karp and
Council Members Glaze and Polvorosa to the City Council Policy Committee.
•
