Planning Commission LOFT/UNAPPROVED T uary 24, 2000
Minute No. 2000-04 (Excerpt) Page 10 of 16
Ms. Swan stated, in response to questions from Commissioners Collier and Demirjian
that cars as well as trucks as large as the F350 pickup truck would be sold at the Marina
Boulevard dealership, but that the Ford Motor Company was not authorizing the sale of
chassis for major trucks and delivery trucks at the site.
Architect GaryWhitfield of Whitfield Associates, 1100 South Coast Highway, Laguna
Beach, California, presented a discussion of the architectural design. He said that the
TrustMark design characteristically includes a front entry kiosk set at a 45 degree angle to
the site in order to address both frontages to the property. The kiosk serves as the main
customer entry to the building. He said the service area adjacent to the showroom office
was also treated as a major element with separate customer entry rather than being
subordinated to the back part of the showroom area. He said the finish and building
architecture were basically a contemporary style with most of the corners rounded and
radiused in order to knock off some of the hard edge of the building and to soften the
overall look. He said the primary material was white and gray in color is of drive-it
material, a material with a smooth stucco-like finish that would be scored to break up the
planes. He said the window treatment featured smaller windows as opposed to large
showroom windows in order to give it more scale and detail. He said the storefront is of
aluminum material with accents of Ford blue glass. He said the building was generally
one and a half stories with a two-story portion that housed offices pushed to the rear to
give relief from the edges of the building.
Architect Whitmore noted that a solid wall behind a landscaped area was being utilized
to screen the front display area from the area to the rear of the property which is the
service and employee parking lot. He said that the wall was of sufficient size that nothing
behind it would be seen by the public. He stated his opinion that landscaping in service
areas of dealerships won't be maintained and usually does not survive.
Commissioner Ravenstad asked what design options were available within the
TrustMark program.
Architect Whitmore responded that the design utilized standard TrustMark colors and
that the so-called kiosk, which in reality was an entry and reception area, was a
prototypical form that was reflected in the round corners elsewhere in the building.
Commissioner Ravenstad noted that the building, at the distance it was set back from
the street, had very little shape to it. He said he liked the kiosk's treatment with a 45-
degree angle facing the corner. He asked if there was a way to increase the variation in
height, particularly the height of the kiosk element, so the building could actually be
perceived from Marina Boulevard and so it would be visually more interesting.
G:'M1NUTES.PC/2000/2-24-2000
2/29/2000
140‘
