Planning Commission L FT/UNAPPROVED F uary 24, 2000
• Minute No. 2000-04 (Excerpt) Page 11 of 16
Architect Whitmore responded that it would be possible to adjust the height of the kiosk
element upward to a limited extent, but that any major increase in the height of this
element would distort the architectural proportion to the second floor element in the back
of the building. He noted that the 45-degree offset was not a standard treatment but was
incorporated to better address the two major streets that fronted the property. He said that
windows also were set back eighteen inches in order to provide some depth and shadow
detail and to differentiate planes.
Chair Chin asked if there were any Ford dealerships with similar elevations in the Bay
Area.
Ms. Swan responded that TrustMark Design has been constructed for a new dealership in
Salinas, and in remodeled dealerships in Vallejo and Livermore. Each of these projects
incorporated in particular the kiosk design and the Ford colors.
Commissioner Ravenstad asked if it was permissible to use a darker blue color along
with the Ford blue color that was presently incorporated, perhaps incorporating the color
into the score lines just above the window and just below the top of the building.
Architect Whitmore said there would be no problem adding a darker blue. He noted
that there would be nice, shiny, colorful cars would be showcased in the patio areas
immediately in front of the building.
Chair Chin opened the informal hearing to comments from the public.
Paul Vargas, 872 Portola Drive, San Leandro, said that the traffic report done by Fehr&
Peers Associates was flawed. He indicated that there were statistical discrepancies within
the report and that its results understated the traffic impact the project was going to have
on Marina Boulevard. He calculated that 200 estimated sales involving approximately
eight sales contacts each would mean that approximately 1600 extra cars would be using
Marina Boulevard each month. He said the traffic study had concentrated on Marina and
Merced. He said he did not understand why the study had not included Marina and
Alvarado and the residential area bounded by Marina Boulevard and Williams Street. He
said he felt the City was negligent in not looking at the whole picture.
Commissioner Collier asked if the dealership would provide a courtesy van to
customers.
Ms. Swan said that Ford did not require its dealers to provide courtesy vans, but she
noted that ninety percent of dealers do provide such service and in particular the Mossi
dealership group provided courtesy vans at its other dealerships.
G:\MJNUTES.PC/2000/2-24-2000
2/29/2000
441o1
