<br /> 45 | P a g e <br />City of San Leandro, CA <br />Fiber Master Plan <br /> <br />Autonomous Vehicles <br /> <br />The National League of Cities has released a policy preparation guide for cities <br />concerning autonomous vehicles26. It includes four specific recommendations: <br /> <br />1. AVs are on our roads today, so start planning now <br />2. Policy development with the right people at the table. <br />3. Track and monitor federal and state developments and make your voices heard. <br />4. Begin planning infrastructure needs and building data and computing capacity to <br />position your city to take advantage of an automated mobility future. <br /> <br />The Strategy recommends designing future transportation planning infrastructure and <br />systems with an eye toward autonomous vehicles, as well as preparing for a possible <br />ordinance in the future, which governs their usage. <br /> <br />Bikes, Ride-Sharing, and More <br /> <br />Uber, the ride-sharing pioneer, recently acquired JUMP Bikes, an electric dockless bike- <br />sharing service, and now calls itself a champion of “smart technology for smart cities27.” <br />From a policy perspective, these early days of the “sharing economy” can create <br />headaches. However, they are also creating opportunities. The city of Alameda was the <br />first to launch a bikesharing program with LimeBike and is analyzing the results28. <br />Meanwhile, the City & County of San Francisco have passed a law required motorized <br />scooters to have a permit to park their vehicles.29 <br /> <br />While there have been challenges with each of these modes of transit, the likely reality is <br />that the startups and companies in the marketspace are here to stay.
