Following presentation of the report, it is recommended that the City Council approve by motion the revised design and budget for the Library Retrofit/Renovation/Expansion project. BACKGROUND The Community Library Center has served the community for almost 40 years. It is very heavily used, serving over 50,000 patrons every month. This heavy usage in addition to the Council's directive to retrofit essential City facilities including the Main Library necessitated the commencement of a significant renovation of the Community Library. DISCUSSION The Library Retrofit/Renovation/Expansion Project now includes: • the original seismic retrofit of the Main Library; • modifications to the Main Library edifice to comply with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations; • seismic retrofit and ADA building modifications of the Senior Meeting Facility which adjoins the Library. This work was not contemplated in the original project but is now required, under the current law, because of the work being done in the Main Library; • renovation of the entire facility (Main Library and Senior Meeting Facility) to address outstanding maintenance issues and to update the facility; • expansion of the public usage area of the library to provide more room for books, reader seating, and technology access area.
